PhotoMidwest hosts regular members-only meetings focusing on specific photographic interests from our membership: Alternography, Black & White, Human Interest, Landscape, Long Exposure, Nature, Travel and the Women's Interest Group are currently scheduled. These Special Interest Groups each meet monthly in the PhotoMidwest Studio, and members may attend as many groups as they wish. Be sure to watch the weekly newsletter for more details on group topics and plans.
Prospective members are also welcome to join us to check the group out. Just contact the person listed who coordinates the sessions and let them know you want to attend.
The Alternography/Analog Processes Group meets on the second Monday of each month at 7 pm. We will discuss anything analog-photography related from plastic cameras to ultra-large format, pinholes to plasmats, film to photogravure, darkroom processes, and any other creative approaches we can think of. Bring your favorite plastic camera or film camera, examples of alternative processes, or just your avid curiosity! The group leaders are Herb Nelson and Katharina Marchant. The Black & White Group meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7 pm. Each month a selected member will present a photographer with his/her history and some photos for a round table discussion. After 30 minutes or so the member who is presenting that month will be able to bring a series of his/her own photographs for comments, followed by a show and tell of up to 2 photos per member with discussion by all. The Human Interest Group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. This interest group includes the following genres: informal and environmental portraiture, documentary, street, travel, sports and event photography. Please bring images that portray humans or their implied presence in a way that tells a story or makes a statement about the human condition. The Landscape Group meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 pm, (but be sure to check the newsletter regarding November and December). Members interested in all kinds of landscape images, including cityscapes, are invited to bring up to four images to each meeting for a new topic each month. Gordon Olson leads the discussions. The Long Exposure Group meets the fourth Monday of each month at 7 pm (but be sure to check the newsletter regarding December). Members interested in any type of subject matter explored through the use of long exposures. Bob Beaverson is the group leader.
The Nature Group has two meetings per month. The Wednesday Night Nature Group meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7 pm to share wildlife and nature images. Later the same week the Friday Noon Nature Group meets at 12 pm noon, just 2 days after the Wednesday Night group. You are welcome to attend both groups. This newly formed interest group is for professional photographers or those interested in becoming professional photographers. Topics include marketing, sales, legal issues, gear information, technical help and anything else that a professional photographer needs to do the job. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm. Contact: Sean Lamb.
The Travel Interest Group meets every fourth Friday of the month at 11:30 am. Bring your lunch and join other members as we share, discuss, and learn from presentations on how to improve our images which portray a sense of place. The Women's Group meets the second Sunday of each month at 6:30 PM, for women only. This group meets to discuss all things photography-related from the viewpoint of the female photographer. Meetings are informal and intended to be friendly, inspiring, supportive and educational. If you are a woman, and a member, this group would welcome the opportunity to get to know you.
